The AMCS is a wrap-around service that provides 16 transformational housing units for Aboriginal mothers at risk of imminent homelessness, and a 25-person daycare for children age 3 to 5 years old. The AMCS is a hectic, fast-paced and rewarding program that requires someone at the front desk who can maintain a positive, healthy demeanour while respecting the boundaries of each of the women who are on their personal wellness journeys while living at the AMCS.
Job Summary:
Focus of the program will be on helping program participants identify ways to incorporate health and wellness     on a daily basis in ways that work for them to improve their overall health and wellness. This activity is guided by you, a professional and cultural facilitator, and is a form of mutual help that builds on Aboriginal community’s traditional strength of supporting community members

Key Responsibilities:

  • Find and engage community consultants to deliver various components of the program
  • Focus on providing a structured environment for learning life skills/healthy living
  • Provide training and learning opportunities for community members to expand knowledge on parenting, health, wellness, healing and cultural awareness
  • Conduct follow-up surveys
  • Liaise with other social services agencies and health care providers
  • Develop work-plan, maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation & research
  • Create linkages to services offered at AMCS and elsewhere in the community that meet the unique and demonstrable needs of the Aboriginal People
  • Develop, coordinate and/or facilitate small groups training sessions
  • Maintain and share up-to-date knowledge of Aboriginal-focused programs and services
  • Work collaboratively with community partners and funders and ensure contract deliverables are met
  • Perform other duties related to the successful operations of the AMCS or the AMCS Family Wellness Program

Due to the nature of the work environment, it is required that all staff members perform duties beyond their job description, such as, but not limited to, answering phone, taking messages, helping other employees with organizing community events, and assist regardless of the program.

QUALIFICATIONS & ASSETS

  • A Bachelor of Social Work degree or equivalent training and experience
  • Min. 3 years’ experience working in Aboriginal focused, community based programs
  • Must have excellent knowledge of Aboriginal cultural customs and traditions
  • Excellent communication, planning and facilitation, coaching and problem solving
  • A criminal record check clearance letter (or willing to obtain)
  • Ability to deliver presentations to small and large groups
  • Good working knowledge of computers
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and effectively
  • Ability to effectively organize workload and manage time
  • Ability to multi-task and establish priorities
  • Ability to deal with individuals in a manner that shows cultural sensitivity, tact and professionalism
  • Knowledge of nutrition, wellness principles, community outreach and public relations
  • Lead as a role model in the area of health and wellness
  • Preference may be given to applicants of Aboriginal ancestry as per Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code
